Since everyone else is doing it...
Resources from 2 to 3=6 XP -Because I like the idea of living comfortable. Also, when you end up needing Resources, you really need it.
Spirit from 2 to 3=14 XP -My affinity sphere. Spirit 3 lets me summon spirits as well as step into the umbra (near spirit realm...may be using the wrong term).
Arete from 3 to 4=24 XP -Because one extra success goes a long way.
Total of 44 XP
Other ideas:
Life: I think this isn't appropriate in this case. He's only interested in the medical aspect of this, so shapeshifting and creating beasts probably isn't something he cares for. Life 4 in conjunction with other Spheres can technically bring a just dead person back, but his newfound belief might consider that spitting on The Great Wheel.
Prime: 2 here would let me do things like create minor spirit talismans or create simple lifeforms. Life 2/Prime 2 can make zombies, add Spirit 3 to give a spirit a host...but once again, that's probably not where Alex may go.
Any other ideas?

You didn't mention entropy, are you happy where it is at present?

Here's the thing... Entropy 3, power-wise, it's pretty awesome. It lets me break matter down, when none of my current powers let me directly affect nonbiological material. I can also just create luck in a limited fashion. Plus, on a minor but possibly important level for us, the destruction aspect of material mimics Matter 2, which, in conjunction with Life 3, let's me directly attack a vampire with magic.
But from a character level, Alex probably sees it as a tool to help out his surgery or to shift the karma of a person to what they deserve. I would probably put it lower than Prime on my scale when it comes to 'does this fit the character'.
So yeah, metagame awesome, RP not so much, and for me, RP trumps in Mage...for the most part.

Your logic is sound.
