So in talking more to James after the game, here's what I can relay about nodes.
In this campaign, Nodes will create three points of quintessence and three points of Tass* per point in the Node. XP cost is three points per point in the background. Therefore, if we all spent three points each, for example, we would get a 5 point Node which would produce 15 points of quintessence and 15 points of Tass a week. Any unused quintessence would turn into Tass at the end of the week.
James made sure to point out that any Node we obtain with strength of 3 background points or higher will have at least one werewolf come at some point to contest our claim. They would definitely start hostile, but there is at least the possibility of befriending them. It would not be constant assaults on our Node, as this is not a magic is dying campaign, and because I think he doesn't want that to be the entirety of the game.
If we were to decide to get a Node, James would give us three flavor options and let us choose between them. Chance and Anya are already interested IC in finding one, so if we wanted to run them doing the legwork to find one as a sidebar, that would be easily done.
A benefit, beyond refilling the quintessence track on our character sheets, would be the ability to make Trinkets and, eventually, wonders. Both Dr. Stake and Anya have sufficient Prime to start making Trinkets if we had access to sufficient quintessence.A flashlight that produces sunlight enough to hurt a vampire might be a possibility. Don't know if we'd ever need such a thing, just a random thought.
What are people's thoughts? How strong of a Node do we want/how much XP do people want to invest?
*Tass, for those who don't know offhand, is crystallized quintessence. It can be carried away from the Node and still retain its potency. You must have Prime 3 to utilize Tass. I'm pretty sure Anya could channel the quintessence in Tass to other characters if need be.
