After the Lord Mayor's visit, the surprisingly anti-climatic return of Mithras, and Anya yelling at about half of the party, but before the group starts seriously planning how to take out Linda, everything is pretty peaceful. Dr. Stake is in the madness place. Alex is avoiding him more than he'd avoid the actual plague. Venisha is trying to figure out what to do with her crew now that half the artifacts are gone. More visits are planned, this time without spies or explosions. And Anya is acting weird.
To an outside observer, maybe nothing would seem off. She's still bubbly and a chatterbox and energetic and a tad bit moody. She's perfectly sociable at the dig site - always checking on Alex or Dr. Stake. Saying hi to Venisha. Talking happily with Chance when he comes and finds her. But she's not inviting anyone to go out to do stuff with her. If she's invited, unless it's something with the entire group, she won't go. She's always got a reason not to: her roommates miss her, got to go to dance class, got an Ecstatic meet up, all fairly plausible. But the sum of it is out of character for the woman who previously would drag any of them out for any excuse whatsoever.
Most damning of all, to those with a keen eye and close familiarity with Anya, she seems to be snubbing Chance. She's not seeking him out any time she has a break. She's not hugging him multiple times a day. She's not asking when they can go have fun again, this day job thing is such a drag, we have to go out tonight or I'll go mad, you have to come with me.
It's not that she's refusing to talk to Chance or being cruel or cold or doing anything but what some people might call having healthy boundaries. She's still obviously fond of him and happy to see him when he's around. But she's holding herself back.
At the end of a workday, like most workdays at this point, she makes her rounds, checking in with each of the cabal. Alex is still cranky, Venisha is still a sweetheart, Dr. Stake is still seeing things that aren't there, and Chance is Chance. She says goodnight to each of them and heads out, saying she's excited to break in a new pair of pointe shoes. She puts in her headphones and starts up a loud pop song, cheerfully making her way down the street.
